E – Example of excellence

Dear Mom –

Happy Mother’s Day weekend! I’m so grateful to spend another one with you! This is probably the life lesson that I would say is engrained in my DNA. “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well. Do it right or don’t do it at all.” Excellence is an example you shared and showed with us growing up, in everything from your diligence at work to how you served others to the way that you would clean and keep us together. One of the things I love about your example of excellence is that you never expect the results of your excellence to point to you, it’s always about God’s glory.

Jesus at the center – of even cleaning the house – becomes the reason and result of your excellence. This is a powerful lesson in my opinion because I’ve learned that when He is the motivation, not people, I can’t help but strive with all my might for excellence. When the Master is the measure it minimizes the mindset of mediocrity. I love these verses as a result:

1 Corinthians 10:31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God

Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.

Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him

So regardless of if it takes longer or cost a bit more, it’s hard for me to cut corners and not strive to give my best. Thank you for instilling this in me – not just by your words but by your example.

An example. You are a Proverbs 31 example to the utmost. This is the most critical part of motherhood, and the part I pray to one day embody. An example to my children that serves as an illustration, model or precedent. You told us and then you showed us. You stopped and sacrificed so we could start and be successful. It was never enough to tell us the way; you made sure we saw you leading the way. I’m not a mother yet, but this is the difference I see in so many – they stop at telling and yelling. Thank you for the live and in living color illustration of an example of excellence.

I hope you enjoy all that this weekend of love will be! Love you always!
